To All Those That Attended The 2011
Tennessee Polk Salad Festival

Thanks to all those that came out to attend, and we hope to see you again next year!

-- The title Miss "Polk Salad" is spelled P.O.L.K because of the Elvis Presley recording of the song "Polk Salad" Annie (Lyrics by Tony Joe White)

-- The Miss in Miss "Polk Salad" is used to represent a southern usage of the word and not to represent marital status.

    Taylor Lindsay

    1st Runner Up: Haley Yelton

    2nd Runner Up: Kala Cisson

Tennessee “Polk Salad” Festival, 2011, was a success in spite of the on again, off again rain showers. Many folks took advantage of the Free Entertainment and Activities. The 4-H club sheared sheep beside the poultry show tent, while others rode in the wagon pulled by the horses. The children had their faces painted like tigers, butterflies and other animals after they completed their own “Polk Salad” Festival tote bag, dog tag, necklace or bracelet for free. The kids also got to throw bean bags at milk bottles filled with sand and pick up ducks for prizes.

The American Legion Post in Rockwood cooked and sold poke sallet, pinto beans, fried green tomatoes, cornbread and homemade desserts with sweet tea. This year the festival had a vendor with a covered wagon that resembled the old wagon trains. They had beef stew, peach cobbler and fried cornbread on cooked on an open fire in large cast iron kettles. Of course, the kettle corn, sno cones and funnel cakes were a hit.

Many crafters set up with their handmade items for sale. Some even demonstrated their craft. One of the crafters set up her pottery wheel and worked throughout the day making items for sale. One of the jewelry booths, also, created items at the festival for special order items. Some of the items for sale were handmade bird houses, wooden toys, beautiful jewelry, handbags, and baby blankets. Quilted throws, wooden decorative ducks, special hand painted candle holders and special handmade items by Cheryl Oran. Cheryl is a local artist whose artwork can also be found on the front of the 2011 “Polk Salad” Festival T-shirt. The t-shirts can still be purchased at Rocky Top General Store in Harriman.

Tommy Hardin, who is director of the entertainment, had the day full of good music and singing from the Gazebo. Several church youth choirs sung in the morning hours. Then, Gene Horner and the Fiddle Shop Band opened up the afternoon with the bluegrass music. Ed Rupp from Channel 10 was on site to play a tune or two on his saxophone. The Wild Blue Yonder Bluegrass Band entertained the festival goers with an hour of wonderful bluegrass picking and grinning.

Taylor Lindsay, from Ten Mile, TN, won the title of 2011 “Miss Polk Salad”. The pageant was held at 4:30 p.m. in the park gazebo. Several contestants walked the runway and smiled their way through the pageant. The judges had to choose a winner among several beautiful ladies. The first runner-up is Haley Yelton from Rockwood and the second runner-up is Kala Cisson from Rockwood. Anyone between the ages of 17 and 27 that lives in the state of Tennessee was eligible to enter.

The Common Folks Group ended the day with music and singing from the gazebo. The sheep was sheared, the ribbons hung from the poultry cages, the last wagon ride was taken, and the last of the poke sallet was eaten until MAY 12, 2012!
